LAHORE : On the issue of passing the bill in the Punjab Assembly, Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Parvez Elahi contacted Secretary General PFUJ Rana Muhammad Azeem. The Speaker Punjab Assembly assured to withdraw all the clauses against the journalists.
The journalists’ protest brought color. The government announced the withdrawal of all clauses against journalists in the Members Protection Privilege Bill. At the call of Secretary General PFUJ Rana Muhammad Azeem, journalists’ organizations staged demonstrations across the country against the bill. Journalists’ organizations continued to protest outside the Governor’s House in Lahore. The protest was attended by various organizations and senior journalists.
Addressing the protesters, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar announced to withdraw all clauses against journalists, saying that if journalists come out for legitimate demands, they will find me with them.
Special Assistant Punjab Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said that the bill on Private Member’s Day was a result of misunderstanding. The Speaker Punjab Assembly will call on the journalists to satisfy them on the controversial provisions.
Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi contacted Secretary General PFUJ Rana Azeem and assured to withdraw the clauses of journalists in the bill.
The protest was called off after the government announced the withdrawal of anti-journalism clauses in the bill.
