Indonesian jail fire kills 40 inmates, injures dozens
A tragic incident has occurred in Indonesia where a prison fire killed 40 inmates and injured dozens. Authorities have set up a high-level committee to investigate the incident.
According to foreign media, the fire broke out in the Indonesian state of Bentin. As soon as the incident was reported, fire brigade and rescue teams reached the spot and started extinguishing the fire. According to rescue officials, 40 prisoners were burnt to death and dozens were injured in the tragic accident that took place in the jail.
Rescue teams rushed the bodies of the dead prisoners to various hospitals by ambulances. In view of the situation, the medical personnel who went on leave have been recalled while declaring an emergency.
Prison officials say the blaze broke out between 1 and 2 a.m. last night. All the prisoners and staff were asleep at the time, so no one could guess the cause of the blaze. Fire brigade vehicles are still trying to put out the blaze.
A prison official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the media that drug addicts were being held in the part of the prison where the fire broke out. It revealed that there were more than 122 inmates in the prison barracks at the time of the fire.
Keep in mind that Indonesia’s Tengi Rang prison is one of the worst prisons in the world. The Indonesian prison is notorious for overcrowding. It is estimated that there are more than 2,000 inmates in the 600-capacity prison.
