Radek Pech will take up the position of Senior Director of the European Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August 2025. He will replace Senior Director Jakub Karfík.
“Radek Pech is one of our most experienced career diplomats. He takes up the position of Director General after his return from Ukraine, where he had the opportunity to deal closely with the current biggest geopolitical challenge in the form of Russian aggression. The unity of Europe, which is the main goal of the section he manages, is needed now more than ever,” said the head of Czech diplomacy, Jan Lipavský.
The current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to Ukraine has been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1992. In the 1990s, he first worked in the Department of Analysis and Planning, then became the Director of the Third Territorial Department. During his career so far, Radek Pech has served as an ambassador in several European offices: from 1997, he headed the representation of the Czech Republic in Finland and Estonia, and then he was the ambassador to Romania and Moldova (2002-2006), Lithuania (2010-2014), and Denmark (2017-2023). At the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he held several directorial positions: he successively headed the Department of Coordination and Institutions of the European Union, the Department of General Affairs of the European Union, the Minister’s Cabinet, and finally the Department of the States of Northern and Eastern Europe. In 2017, he became Deputy Deputy Minister for Management of the European Section.
“I have been dealing with relations with European countries and the European Union my entire career. Europe, within which the Czech Republic is a medium-sized country, is our home environment and at the same time the focus of our diplomacy. In the current complex geopolitical situation fundamentally influenced by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, it is in Europe that our security and prosperity are at stake. I look forward to working with a seasoned team of professionals in the European section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” added Senior Director Radek Pech.
