Today, the United Nations General Assembly elected the Czech Republic for the period 2025 – 2027 by a majority of 166 votes. The Czech Republic’s membership in the Council ended in 2023. Re-membership is a confirmation of the priority position of human rights in Czech foreign policy, which is in line with the government’s program statement from January 2022. Membership , which will start on January 1, 2025, will be the fifth in a row.

” This is great news that underlines how fundamental human rights are to Czech foreign policy. Today’s election of the Czech Republic to the UN Human Rights Council is also a gift for President Václav Havel’s 88th birthday, “said Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský after the successful candidacy.

The main priorities of the Czech membership will be the submission of further resolutions on freedom of assembly and association and equal participation. The Czech Republic will continue to support civil society, non-governmental organizations, human rights defenders and journalists. Priority will be given to the human rights situation in Russia and Belarus.
